What is School and Student Services (SSS)? top
SSS is a financial aid services provider. SSS is owned by the National Association of Independent Schools, a nonprofit membership association. Many private schools and organizations across the country use SSS to help them assess a family’s ability to pay school costs. SSS helps schools make objective and equitable financial aid decisions. The philosophy behind the SSS process is that parents are primarily responsible to finance their child’s education to the extent they are able.

What is the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS)? top
The Parents’ Financial Statement is the cornerstone of your financial aid application. When you submit your PFS to SSS, you are granting permission to analyze your financial information. We analyze your income, expenses, and family assets. Then we estimate the amount you can contribute to school expenses. We send that estimate to all of the schools you indicate. Schools use that estimate as a starting point to determine your family’s financial aid package. Each school makes its own financial aid decisions, taking into consideration its budget and financial aid policies.

Is my information safe? top
Yes. The process we use at SSS to protect your information meets the most rigorous standards. Schools that use SSS are also encouraged to keep your information private and to allow access to as few people as possible. Statements and other paper documents in the SSS confidential files will be destroyed one year after receipt.

Who makes financial aid decisions? top
Each school makes its own financial aid decisions. SSS does not make final decisions. Contact the school financial aid administrator if you have questions about your family’s financial aid package.

How much does it cost to have my information sent to schools? top

If you are applying online for the 2014-15 academic year, the cost is $41 to process the PFS and send it to as many schools as you indicate. The fee is nonrefundable. If you cannot afford the fee, contact the school to which you are applying for information about the SSS Fee Waiver Program.

No. Once you have submitted and paid for your Parents’ Financial Statement, it cannot be withdrawn from the SSS system, and your fee will not be refunded.

Are there any other forms I must complete? top

Completing the PFS Online is just one step in the financial aid process. Many schools require that you submit forms in addition to the PFS – such as tax forms or a Business/Farm statement for those applicants who own businesses. Some schools have SSS collect those documents on their behalf. Check with the school(s) to which you are applying to see what is required, where you should send it and by what date. If you have been instructed to send materials to SSS, you can mail them or upload them in the PFS Online in the Manage Documents section.

How do I know if SSS has received my PFS or other documents? top
Once you have successfully submitted your PFS Online, we will e-mail you to confirm receipt. If the school to which you are applying has opted to have SSS notify you about outstanding documentation, then you will receive a system-generated e-mail to notify you that key information is missing. You will also be able to view your PFS progress on your home page Dashboard in the PFS Online. The Dashboard displays which materials have been received or processed, and which are outstanding. (If you mailed in documents, allow 10 days for the documents to have been received and processed.)

What if I am not the parent of the student applicant? top
If you are financially responsible for the student, complete the PFS (fill in the section for Parent A).

What if I am a divorced parent? top
Generally speaking, both of the student's parents are expected to help contribute towards tuition as they are able, regardless of marital status. You should expect that each parent will be asked to submit a separate PFS and will not have access to each other's application information. Different schools may have different requirements for divorced parents. Be sure to contact the school(s) you are applying to in order get the most appropriate guidance for each school.

What if I have more than one child? top

Online PFS
You can apply for aid for any number of schools and children in the PFS Online application. Be sure that you list all children who will be applying to schools in the Student Applicant section and all additional dependents (not student applicants) in the Dependents section.

Paper PFS
If you are applying for the 2014-15 academic year, your application must be completed online. Paper applications are no longer accepted for the 2014-15 academic year.

If you are applying for the 2013-14 academic year, you can use one printed PFS to apply for aid for up to three children and to send the results for these children to up to three schools each. If you wish to send the results to additional schools, you may submit the Additional School Request form in print or online. If you wish to apply for aid for more than three children, ask the financial aid administrators at each school whether you need to complete more than one PFS. Once you have submitted your paper PFS, you cannot add any additional students.

What if I do not know the exact amount in response to a question? top
If you do not know an actual amount, give your best estimate. Enter a zero (0) if no other amount applies. Do NOT enter symbols, such as >, <, ~, or N/A, or words such as “none,” “same,” or “unknown.” Round all figures to the nearest dollar.

If I applied last year, do I have to fill out another PFS? top
Yes, you should file a new PFS for every year that you apply for financial aid.
